HISTORY


First inhabitants on island Ugljan were Liburns in 4th century B.C. They built settlements on hill Celinjak. Romans occupied island in 1st century B.C. Croats inhabitated island Ugljan in 7th century. In 16th and 17th century Zadar`s nobels were building castles for their families on island Ugljan. For example castles of families Califfi, Lipeus, Damjan Vrgada, Bartolozzi, Ponte... Since 19th century inhabitants of island Ugljan have been working in transatlantic countries as seafarers. They built new houses with earned money.

LOCATION AND CLIMATE


Island Ugljan (Croatia, North Dalmatia) is located against Zadar in Croatian region North Dalmatia. It has area of 50 km2. Between Zadar and island Ugljan is Zadar`s Canal. Island Ugljan is connected with island Pasman with a bridge at Zdrelac. Island Ugljan has around 7600 inhabitants. Tourist destinations on island Ugljan: Preko, Poljana, Sutomiscica, Lukoran, Ugljan, Kali and Kukljica. Climate on island Ugljan is Mediterranean with mild winters and hot summers. It has around 2500 sunny hours per year. Snow is very rare on island Ugljan. Winds that blow are bora (mostly in winter time), scirocco (mostly in spring and autumn) and mistral (mostly in summer time). Vegetation on island is very rich, mostly holm oak, pine trees, cypress, olive trees, fig trees, macchia... Preko is located oposite to Zadar, in center part of island Ugljan. Preko is administrative and cultural center of island Ugljan. From Preko you can go on excursions to St. Mihovil. From the fort is great view on many islets of Zadar`s archipelago and National Park Kornati. Poljana is located on east side of island Ugljan, next to Preko. It is also a port. Inhabitants are directed mostly to agriculture and olive growing. Poljana is located in a bay with peninsula St. Peter with Church of St. Peter from 13th century. Sutomiscica is located on east side of island Ugljan. It is situated on the road that passes across the island. It has youngest marina in Zadar`s region. Lukoran is located on north-east side of island Ugljan. It is located in a bay protected from the winds. Inhabitants are directed to agriculture, olive growing and fishing.. Lukoran was first time mentioned in 1075. Ugljan is located on north side of island Ugljan, 11 km north from Preko. It has around 1100 inhabitants, directed to agriculture, fishing, olive and vine growing and tourism. It was inhabitated by Liburns in 4th century B.C. Kali was first time mentioned in 1299. It is located on east side of island Ugljan, south from Preko. Kali has around 1700 inhabitants. Kukljica is located on south-east part of island Ugljan. Kukljica has around 650 inhabitants. Name Kukljica was first time mentioned in 1106. Known persons from Kukljica are singer Maja Blagdan and opera singer Boris Martinovic.
